In the German-held occupation territories in World War Two, especially in Poland, ghettos were formed in the cities. A ghetto was a closed and guarded neighborhood within the city, into which the Jews were forcefully relocated and registered. These neighborhoods or "ghettos" were basically an urban form of a prison in which Jews were disallowed free movement, commerce or basic civil rights. The ghettos were severely overcrowded and lacked in basic supplies and services that people need. They were intended by the German occupation forces as a place to warehouse a very large number of Jewish people until they got around to making "selektions" or "aktions"on the town squares, in which large numbers of Jewish people were mandatorily chosen for liquidation, and forced onto railcars bound for the death camps that were set up by the Germans. Or murdered on-site, in the case of "aktions." Probably the largest and most famous ghetto was in Warsaw, Poland.

Ghettos were small parts of cities during the Holocaust where Nazis forced Jews to live. They took the Jews from the surrounding area and forced them into the ghettos. The ghettos were used as a way to control and segregate Jews while the German Nazis decided what to do with the Jews. Eventually, the Germans created killing centers, where the Jews were executed, and concentration camps, where the Jews were forced to work, but were still eventually killed. There were at least 1,000 ghettos in German-occupied areas of Poland and the Soviet Union alone.

conditions varied, but only in the way that they varied from bad to worse. If someone, or someone looking after them did not have work, then they would starve, potentially to death, or succumb to illness due to a decrease in resistance.

A ghetto was the neighborhood that they would lock Jews up in the city before they went to the concentration camps. They didn't have much food and conditions weren't the best.
