This is one of those questions where any answer is not enough. More specifically, what was happening where, and to whom was it happening?

Taken as a swatch of a world era (1569 to 1650) we can glance around and see what the state of the known world was during these years:

  • Iceland was in the midst of rule by the Danes (1380-1944), and during this period was between the occurrence of the Black Death (1402) and destruction by volcanic activity in the late 1700s.
  • The Age of Exploration (1434-1580) was coming to a close, having begun with the rounding of Cape Bojador and soon to end with the return of Drake from his circumnavigation of the globe.
  • The Renaissance (generally 1363-1600), as described by the writings of Michelet and Burckhardt (in 1860), was nearing its close with regards to most of Europe (especially Italy), however the French Renaissance (1530-1600) was still very much in evidence.
  • Japan was experiencing almost a century of continuous warfare during an era called Sengoku-Jidal, which would end in 1600 with the Battle of Sekigahara.
  • Elizabeth was nine years into her reign as Queen of England in 1569. She would die in 1603.
  • It was the middle part of the Spanish Classical period (1500-1600)
  • It was directly in the middle of the Renaissance of English language (1500-1650) which is dominated (after 1593-1612) by the influence of Shakespeare's plays.
  • It was the middle years of the Persian Safavid Dynasty (1501-1736) and the Mogul Empire (1526-1707).
  • It was very much in the midst of the Age of Piracy, which began with the exploits of Pierre LeGrand and ended with defeat of the Barbary pirates in 1820. During the years 1569 and 1650, Spanish ships were being attacked almost continually.
  • During ten days from October 5th to the 14th, 1582, Catholic nations switched from the old Julian to the Gregorian calendar. Britain and America would not make the change until 1752.
  • The last 50 years of the 1569-1650 period encompasses the earliest years of the Tokugawa, or Edo, era in Japan, as it does the First House of Stuart in England after 1603 and the death of Elizabeth.
  • It includes the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) in the German Empire.

So, as you can see there was much happening during this selected period and much that has been left out for lack of space (and sanity trying to record it all).
