The last time Grant tried to put on a big frontal assault against Lee.

It failed at a high cost in casualties, and Grant learned his lesson. From then on, he just crowded Lee into a corner and kept him there till he ran out of men.

The Battle of Cold Harbor was very significant because the Union lost a lot men about 3000 to 7000 in less than 20 minutes. It's one of the most disastrous and goriest battles in the American Civil War so destructive that Gen. Ulysses S. Grant said "If there is one thing I regret it is Cold Harbor". The losses sustained needlessly by Grant would be unacceptable in the US today.

The Battle of Cold Harbor was fought from May 31 to June 12, 1864 (with the most significant fighting occurring on June 3). It was one of the final battles of Union Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign during the American Civil War, and is remembered as one of American history's bloodiest, most lopsided battles. Thousands of Union soldiers were killed or wounded in a hopeless frontal assault against the fortified positions of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's army.

It was the last Confederate line in defence of their Capital: Richmond, Virginia.

And it was the scene of endless attrition, which Grant knew he would win, because he had ended prisoner-exchanges, and when Sherman despoiled the Georgia farmlands, he knew that the Confederate armies would starve before long.

The US Civil War Battle of Cold Harbor is an important one. Important in the sense that it demonstrated how difficult it was to make a large assault against almost perfect Confederate fortifications.
