Daily whippings, beatings, very poor rations... The beds were simply planks of wood, nothing more. Chain gang work was very common, and each prisoner--upon entering the jail--had chains riveted around their neck. There was some relaxation time, but only enough so the prisoners didn't die from pure exhaustion. Ball-and-chains were actually used, and when not tied to the line prisoners kept the end of their chain in a pocket so it didn't drag on the ground.

All of that, every day, for the entire sentence--years upon years of mind-numbing labor. Not fun.
