Although born in Scotland in 1747 and originally thus a British citizen, he fought on the side of the American colonists. A superb mariner and a self-taught warrior, he first served on the "Alfred" as a lieutenant, then took command of the sloop "Providence" in 1775, followed by the "Ranger" and most famously, the "Bonhomme Richard" in 1779. His major contributions to the revolutionary war effort, in addition to his naval victories, were: 1. bringing the fight to the enemy by attacking the British on the homefront and terrorizing England, causing them to devote war resources to defense and 2. providing much needed morale boosts and propaganda victories to the American war effort, which in turn influenced the French to aid the Americans. Louis XVI loved Jones, and he was celebrated in Paris after his stunning victory over the "Serapis". It has been said that the Revolutionary War was lost on land and won at sea; John Paul Jones contributed a great deal to this. His overall record of 40 - 0 in naval engagements speaks for itself -- "I have not yet begun to fight."
