Answer His flight from Mecca Ten years after Muhammad began his mission, his followers were still a minority in Mecca - being terribly oppressed by the ruling tribe there. A group of men and women in another city had heard about the Prophet's message. In their city was a tribe of Jews who always spoke of the coming of a prophet, which they soon expected. When Muhammad came along, those men and women from the city of Yathrib came to a place near Mecca to meet him. They believed in him and swore allegiance to him. So Muhammad and his followers migrated from Mecca to Yathrib - which was renamed 'Medinah' by the Prophet. His migration there, and the setting-up of the first Islamic State - is called the "Hijrah", or "Migration".
