The Norman (ie a Viking living in what is now part of France) Duke William's army of invasion defeated the followers of Earl Harold Godwinson of England. Harold was killed in the battle. The defeat of the English enabled Duke William (known later as William the Conqueror) to take control of all of England.

On the 14th October 1066, the battle of Hastings began. The fight was between William duke of Normandy and Harold Godwinson of England. Edward the Confessor had died and they were fighting over the role to be king.

Harold had 3 plans, all of which failed. His first plan was to guard the south coast, until his soldiers had ran out of supplies, they also had to go back up home to collect the harvest. The men were very tired as they had recently fought Hardaarda. Harold's plan had also failed as William was not ready to come over, as the water was too choppy.

After Harold and his soldiers left the south coast, William came over to England. Harold's second plan was to form a surprise attack on William. But again his plan failed, as William had scouts on look-out in case Harold decided to attack.

Harold's third plan started off well, but then turned into a disaster, that was fatal. Harold had placed his soldiers on a hill, so it would be difficult for William's men to go up the hill with their horses. This plan did fail, William faked his death, and this then got around that William had been killed, so Harold ran off the hill charging at William's army. William then got up and announced that he was not dead. Harold had now made a fatal mistake! William charged at Harold and killed him. William had won the Battle of Hastings!

In conclusion, William won for many things, he had good weapons, strong fighters ad wits. William knew how to defeat Harold. He won the battle by making Harold come off the hill, by using his brain and faking his own death. His plan worked and he became king on Christmas Day that year!

Quotes: "Into Harold's hands I commit my Kingdom." "All day long they stood there and we could not move them." "They were so tightly massed together that the dead could not fall." "See, I am not dead and with God's help we shall win this day!" "When the stars came out, men were still fighting." "William, in the company of Count Eustace of Boulogne, saw Harold from afar".

"He was fiercely hewing at the Normans that beset him. William called Eustace to help him and they rode with two other knights to give him battle. William, Eustace, Hugo of Ponthieu and Giffard came to the hill top and burst through the English they found there. They came upon the king and hewed at him with their swords. One stabbed him in the chest, another cut off his head and another slashed at his vitals, spilling them upon the ground. This last man cut off the king's thigh and carried it away, but William was much angered by this vile deed and sent the man from his service." "May God forgive me, for I have taken that which was not mine ..." "There, Harold may yet guard the coast of the land he loved so much."
