The First Continental Congress originally called for peace. When peace was not possible a declaration of war was issued and a declaration of independence.

George Washington was the first President of the United States, serving from 1789 to 1797. He was also the first commander-in-chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.
Although Washington was the commanding and victorious general in the Revolutionary, he served as a leader in the continental congress before the war began, chaired the constitutional convention after the war and served two terms as the first President of the United States and it was a time of peace.
