THE BRITISH East India Company WAS A TRADING COMPANY DURING THE 1780's
The Company though entered to do business but finding the people and the rulers of India divided, the Company managed to get the approval and blessings of the the British parliament to mischievously manage control over the states and finally rule over India with their policy of Divide and Rule
Although the British East India Company was formed in 1600 there were other East India Companies operating on behalf of France, the Netherlands, Spain and Portugal. Explorer Vasco da Gama discovered a naval route which caused riches from the Orient to be pouring into Europe. With other nations importing fortunes in goods and plunder, Queen Elizabeth decided England should get some, too. So she granted the East India Company a Royal Charter. The charter she issued created the first official joint-stock corporation. A joint-stock corporation is composed of investors who are granted shares in a company. In return for their initial investments, shareholders are given percentages of the company's profits based on the number of shares the investor holds.
The Company's ships first arrived in India, at the port of Surat, in 1608. Sir Thomas Roe reached the court of the Mughal Emperor as the emissary of King James I in 1615, and gained the right to establish a factory at Surat. Gradually the British eclipsed the Portuguese and over the years they saw a massive expansion of their trading operations in India. Numerous trading posts were established along the east and west coasts of India, and considerable English communities developed around the three presidency towns of Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras. It did took several decades for the East India Company to truly become profitable. When they did finally become profitable the company took it to next step and rose to global domination in both business and in government. As the company grew in power so did England too.
