In 1848 gold was discovered by John Marshall at Sutter's Mill. As soon as people heard there was a rush to CA. Over 40,000 came within the first few months. There was a 10,000 wagon jam at the border and people came on foot, by train, and on ships. Ships were left to rot in San Francisco Bay ( even today they still find ships) and they headed to the area above Sacramento. Gold camps were made and it was a rough/hard life to live in one. Camps with the name of Angels Camp, Murphy's, Columbia, Hang Town, Sonora, and others grew ( you can still find these towns today). People like Mark Twain came to the camps and many of his stories reflect the life of that time. The rush to the camps was so great that CA became a state on Sept. 9, 1850.

The California gold rush began in January of 1848 and continued until 1855. Gold was first found in Coloma, California by James W. Marshall.
The California gold rush is when James Wilson Marshall at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California discovered gold on January 24, 1848 setting off a stream of gold-seekseekers "rushing" to California to find their fortune. Word was spreading rapidly by the end of 1848 and beginning of 1849, and the newcomers were nicknamed "the forty-niners".
The California Gold Rush was an influx of treasure hunters that began when James Wilson Marshall discovered gold ore at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California, in the Sierra Nevada near Sacramento.
It began on 24 January 1848 and continued to around 1855. It resulted in some 300,000 people arriving in the area to seek their fortune, with people coming from all over the world - Europe, Asia and other parts of the American continent. The vast majority did not become wealthy, but they swelled the population of the state around San Francisco. The general term for these miners was Forty-niners, which much later became the name of the NFL team, the San Francisco 49ers.
The California Gold Rush began a population boom.
