Mao Zedong was a hard-line communist with an economic policy primarily based upon central-planning and full government socialism.

Xiaoping was a more moderate communist with an economic policy primarily based upon a mixture of free-market capitalism and socialist communism.

The leadership techniques of Mao and Deng were very different. Despite this both leaders wanted to create economic, social and agricultural reforms. Mao was much more single minded in how communism should be carried out and was reluctant to work with the west. He also was worried about capitalist ideas polluting the Chinese thus he made the cultural revolution (1966). Another example was the great leap forward. Deng focused on building up China's industry, he gave rewards to those workers who were the best, opened up multiple factories, bought stuff from the USA. In short he was much more open minded. This actually increased China's productivity so to some extent he was more successful than Mao. Mao is famous for making China a communist nation and keeping it that way. Mao didn't like Deng and sent him to do physical labor during the cultural revolution. Thus they were very different and famous communist leaders leaving a legacy in modern China.
