Portugal was an ally of Britain & Napoleon wanted the Continental System to blockade trade between Britain & Europe. By very dubious means Napoleon usurps the crown of Spain & gives it to his brother Joseph. Sir John Mooores army evacuates at Corunna. The Britsh then re land near Lisbon in order to help Portugal & maintain trade links. After the convention of Cintra, in which the Royal Navy kindly gave the French a lift on their ships ! the Army was commanded by Wellesley, who goes on to bcome the Duke of Wellington. Britain was implaccably opposed to Napoleons continental domination.

The place was Yorktown, Virginia, Union General George McCellan and Confederate General Joseph Johnston. The events that took place: McCellan landed along the James Rivers--McCellan sits there and waits (ah yes his wonderful technique). The goal for McCellan is Richmond; remember this is part of the Union's strategy aka "Operation Anaconda." Lee is able to block McCellan though. Since McCellan is all the way over in Yorktown, Virginia Lincoln worries about Washington D.C. not having forces to protect it. This leds to Second Manassas/2nd Bull Run. The significance is the high causalities General Johnstons fell to Robert E. Lee. The Peninsular Campaign is part of the Anaconda because Lincoln is still trying to capture Richmond.

The Peninsular Campaign was, to all intents, a side show in the Napoleonic Wars. It was held together by a small British/Portuguese army, the only one Britain could afford and supply as most of its available money and manpower was in the Royal Navy.

After the initial attempts by the Army of Spain to stand up to the French they were forced to rely on guerrilla methods which worked quite well due to the spread-out nature of the various French corps. Whenever the French combined to attack the British/Portuguese they left many guerrillas in their rear to take over the countryside.

As was mentioned at the beginning, it was a sideshow but it could be nothing more than that as the resources in Spain were not enough to supply the large armies used in the rest of Europe. It did prove that the Armies of France were not invincible and was a continual drain on French manpower and weapons which could have been useful elsewhere.

Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor of France, had invaded Spain and named his brother Joseph as the King of Spain. Great Britain and Portugal had good reason to fear that they were next for French invasions, so they formed a coalition with the rightful King of Spain to oust the French from Spain. For the Spanish, the purpose of the Peninsular War was the throw the French out and place their own king back on the throne. For Great Britain and Portugal it was preventative medicine.

The so-called Peninsula plan was a brilliant idea of Union General George B. McClellan. It was called by that name inasmuch as McClellan decided the best way to capture Richmond was not to attack from the North and be forced to march 100 miles to reach Richmond. On the Virginia coast lay a Union Fort Monroe. This was vital to have Union forces keep an eye on the Confederates. Monroe was close to the several peninsulas created by the several large rivers that flowed into the Chesapeake Bay. By landing Union troops from Fort Monroe onto the main peninsula the rivers formed, the Union could surprise the South and the distance needed to march on Richmond was almost cut in half.
