Being an all volunteer army with equal opportunity, both male & female soldiers were volunteering for money and benefits; which would put them in the post high school age of young men and women looking for jobs. Thus, between 18 and 22 would most likely be the "job hunting" age for most military enlisted "members".

During the Vietnam War, US Army officers (Air Force, Marine, and Navy officers always had to have a college education) did not have to have any college to become an officer; the man was drafted, given a GT test, if he scored high he was sent to army OCS (Officer Candidate School). When the all volunteer equal opportunity army came about after Vietnam, US Army officers had to have a college education which put them on par with the other military branches. This means that the age of military officers after Vietnam had to have been women and men in their early to mid 20s; since they had to have up to four years of college.
