What Grant did was come AROUND Vicksburg and attacked it from the south, where they were least expecting it. He cut loose from his supply line and had his soldiers have only the food they could carry as they went through the swampy land around the city.
The south had no strategy for Vicksburg. They just hunkered down behind the earthworks and hoped for rescue. Lee's attempt to distract the Union forces by invading Pennsylvania proved ill-conceived and ultimately disastrous.
Artillery bombardment and naval gunfire were used to soften up the Confederate defenses, then a massive attack along a 3-mile front was initiated. Twice this strategy of overwhelming force failed, so a siege was laid. The city then fell in just 10 days.
A siege by its very nature is a strategy of Attrition. Each side tries to wear the other down. The besieger hopes to break the commander's will or starve the garrison out before the enemy can send a relieving force to raise the siege. Each side is gambling that the other side will run out of supplies first. Under these conditions, assaults and raids are employed to force the opponents to use up their supplies at a faster rate. Sometimes engineers are used to undermine fortificaions or to dig tunnels to bypass them while securing the besieging forces from attack from the rear by digging breastworks and trenches.
After Grant's initial series of assaults failed, as did a naval demonstration, Grant chose an indirect approach, marching his army downriver on the opposite bank to a point well below Confederate gun emplacements, recrossed the river, and led them on a difficult march through the bayous to surprise the city from the rear. Following another series of failed assaults, Grant settled in to a protracted siege. Ultimately the strategy that worked was Attrition.
Following the failure of a frontal assault, Grant maneuvered through the swamps and cut Vicksburg off from the possibility of relief and resupply. He then pounded the town steadily with artillery until the town had no food. At that point, Pemberton surrendered his forces, and the town. It was a siege of attrition.
