On November 3rd, 1957, a dog named Laika was launched into orbit by the USSR. The satellite was the second space success by the Soviets, and was named Sputnik II. The dog survived for a few hours, but died from stress and overheating in the capsule, which burned up on reentry five months later.

Yes. The first animal in space was Laika, a female dog around three years of age. She was launched into orbit by the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2 on November 3, 1957. Laika did not survive more than a few hours in space due to overheating of the cockpit, but paved the way for the first human mission in 1961.
