Monterey Bay.
It became a Spanish Colony and 400 years later Impearlist Americans made it a part of their Empire as a US Territory.
The purchase of the "Louisiana Territory" from France did nothing to help later settlers to California; California was, at that time, part of Spain. However, Oregon was part of the Louisiana Territory (although the border between what would become Washington State and Canada was not yet fixed.) And much of the path that settlers would take to California and Oregon was through the Louisiana Territory. Perhaps the biggest point was that the purchase of the Louisiana Territory placed the United States adjacent to the Spanish colonies which later became Mexico. In 1835, the Texan war of independence from Mexico began, culminating in the 1836 defeat of the Mexican forces at the Battle of San Jacinto. (The Battle of the Alamo of a few months earlier was a tactical defeat but a strategic victory, delaying the Mexicans and providing time for Texan troops to be gathered.) The acceptance of the Republic of Texas into the United States provoked the Mexican-American War in 1845. The 1846 Bear Flag Rebellion created the short-lived California Republic, and the US crushed the Mexican forces and annexed California.

No. The district was named the Territory of Columbia, Columbia being a poetic name for the United States in use during the 1790s. Later this was renamed the District of Columbia, and then even later Washington, DC.
The Louisiana territory was controlled by France from 1699 to 1762. France handed over the territory to Spain in 1762 and then again reacquired the territory in 1800. During their reign Spain had denied Americans access to New Orleans. Spain did not like American influence to increase in the territory. France at the time of reacquiring the territory had assured Spain that the territory would not be handed over to third party. Spain protested against Louisiana purchase which double the size of United States. Spain and USA later got into a dispute over the boundaries of the territory.
After the Mexican-American War, the whole territories of California were split on Alta California (Upper California) which corresponds to the present-day US state of California, and Baja California (Lower California) which corresponds to the peninsula of the same name. It became the territory of Baja California for the following 80 years, until 1930 when the Mexican Congress decided to split up such territory in two: the North Territory of Baja California (Territorio Norte de Baja California) and South Territory of Baja California (Territorio Sur de Baja California), being divided by the 28th parallel.Years later in 1951, Mexican president Miguel Aleman Valdes announced that the North Territory of Baja California satisfied the conditions required by the Constitution to be admitted as a free and sovereign state: population and economic ability to survive without federal support. The new state was named as Estado Libre y Soberano de Baja California (English: Free and Sovereign State of Baja California). Finally, in 1974 Mexican President Luis Echeverria Alvarez pushed a bill for the South Territory of Baja California to be elevated to the category of state.
Spanish territory claimed the largest territory that later became a part of the United States.
the Northern Territory is what it was called

When the Mexican War ended, the US gained control of territory extending West to California. This opened up a dispute as to how to allow States to decide if they would be Free states or Slave states. This eventually lead to the erupton of the Civil War some 10 years later.
