There were three Punic Wars and each of them had different causes.
The First Punic war was precipitated by some mercenaries from southern Italy who seized the city of Messana (modern Messina) on the east coast of Sicily. They were attacked by the Greek city of Syracuse, the most powerful city in the island (there were Greek cities in the east and the south of Sicily). Carthage had five ports in the west of Sicily. In the past there had been wars between the Carthaginians and the Greeks of Sicily. The mercenaries asked both Rome and Carthage for help. The former decided to help, but established a garrison in Messana. Not happy with this the mercenaries asked Rome for help again. Rome expelled the Carthaginian garrison from Messana and then besieged Syracuse which was forced to become an ally of Rome. Concerned about this alliance, Carthage mobilised for war.
In Second Punic War Hannibal, the Carthaginian general, wanted war because he wanted revenge against Rome for fraudulently seizing Corsica and Sardinia from Carthage taking advantage of the fact that the latter was facing a military rebellion after the first war. Hannibal provoked the war and quickly mobilised an army to invade Italy from his base in the Carthaginian territories in southern Spain.
Rome used an excuse to declare war for the Third Punic War. A political faction in Rome wanted to destroy Carthage because she had recovered economically from the second war. They were afraid of a resurgence in the power of their rival and wanted to eliminate it.
The wars arose from a collision between two states expanding their territorial and commercial interests coming into collision.
The result was that the winner, Rome, exterminated its rival, finally sealing the end by destroying the city of Carthage, selling its people into slavery, and establishing a Roman war veterans colony on its site.
This successful conclusion established Rome as the main power in the Western Mediterranean, and the spillover of its expanded power began to embroil it in the affairs of the Eastern Mediterranean.
Rome basically gained control of the captured Carthaginians and used them as slaves. Although, some of the slaves payed or earned their freedom and started there new lives as ''Romans'' so to speak. Not only did the Punic Wars get Rome some slaves, it gave them a lot of land! The Romans earned there mass power and land through the Punic Wars givng them the advantages to be at the top of the Mediterrainian food chain.
Sincerely,

The first Punic war was caused by Rome and Carthage both being requested to aid Messana after being attacked by the tyrant Hiero of Syracuse. Carthage already had a footing in Sicily and aimed to use the battle to gain control of Sicily and the straits. By choosing to intervene in Sicily, Rome was bringing themselves against Carthage, not Syracuse. The leader of Carthage at the time was Hamilcar Barca; Hannibal led the Second Punic War.
It was a contest for control of Sicily between former allies Carthage and Rome. It expanded into a contest for control of the Western Mediterranean and led to two further wars, resulting in Roman control and the extermination of Carthage.
what were the causes and results of the punic wars?
Rome wanted to expand its empire and Carthage threatened to control the Mediteranean.
