World War 2 was the only war with US involvement that didn't involve a large, organized dissent movement. Pearl Harbor was evidence that an 'isolationist' stance was untenable. As knowledge of fascist and Nazi atrocities increased, more and more of the US population saw that US involvement was defendable. See link.

America decided originally not to get involved in World War 2 because of the toll World War 1 took on the country and because the state of the economy. However, with the bombing of pearl harbor, America decided to join the War, which eventually pulled the country out of it's economic depression.

When 9-11 happened I asked my mom about the bombardment of Pearl Harbor and what it was like. She was a teen when it happened on that Sunday morning and listening to the radio when the news report came on about it. After hearing about the attack she went into the living room to tell my grandfather what had been reported. He told her it was impossible and that she had heard it wrong. Today, we know that isn't true. When events like Pearl Harbor or the Trade Center happen it seems like it isn't real. My guess is that you are too young to remember 9-11 or you wouldn't ask the question. The feelings are, sadness, disbelief, denials about the event, survival, fright, wishing it would go away. The people of 1940's didn't have TV, but did see newsreels at the movies and men/ boys they knew enlisted and the deaths from the war effected everyone. War is an ugly business and not a glorious event. Millions died in WW2 and in other wars, but somehow we haven't learned what an awful thing it is.
