It's a long story.... But primarily the 2nd world war was a direct result of the 1st world war. However its not quite as simple as that & WW2 was a far greater, more global conflict & much more devastating, particularly to the civillian populations. Much of the international rivalry in the world wars stems from the relationship between the French & Germans & this can be traced back to the war of 1870/71 in which Prussia was swiftly victorious against France. In its turn this was seen by some as revenge for the predation of Napoleon in 1806 when after defeating the Austrians & Russians at Austerlitz in December 1805 he destroyed the Prussian forces at the battle of Jena/Auerstadt.
