There were no antibiotics nor vaccines at the time. The only thing would be what are called supportive measures such as keeping warm and drinking fluids. The average life expectancy was 25-35. Many children did not live to see age five.

Both of these are viral diseases without cures. The only treatments once you have the diseases were supportive, meaning doing whatever we can to keep the body's immune system strong to fight off the virus. That usually means, fluid, anti fever meds, iv nutrients if needed, treat any secondary bacterial infections, ect.

There are vaccines for both. However, like any medicines or vaccines, there are always potential side effects. You have to weigh the risks. At the moment, the risk of getting either diseases is so low that it's not worth taking the risk of adverse problems from the vaccines.
