The Tet offensive in 1968 was a brilliant attack plan by the Communist Vietnamese it surprised the west and lowered over all morale of South Vietnam and U.S troops because there capital Saigon (now known as Ho Chi Minh city) was tooken in so little time. Not only were the troops affected but American citizens presured the goverment even more to withdraw from Vietnam because of the casulties the U.S had 1968 was the most bloodiest year for America with 16592 casulties. Eventually the U.S and South Vietnamese forces would take back the capital but The communist would have a strong foot hold in south Vietnam untill the war ended

A bit surprised on the part of the US veterans already there. An attitude of "let's clean em out!" From the recent arrivals, especially the leadership, finishing off the enemy in open battle had been a major complaint from the regular army and marine corps for years; now they had that opportunity.

The VC just about were cleaned out, after this enemy offensive. After 1968, only the NVA were the main adversary.

Though the Tet offensive was eventually pushed back by South Vietnamese forces, the main effect of this strike was to lower morale and support for the republic in the South. In addition, the attack was highly publicized in America, leading to growing disapproval of American presence in Vietnam and the eventual withdrawal of American forces.

The Tet Offensive was a very successful attack against US and allied forces as the North Vietnamese forces attacked during a time that was typically a holiday for them. With Tet taking place at the beginning of '68 and that year being the year with the most casualties (nearly 17,000 American dead) it left a delible mark on the mental state as well as the strategic postions of American forces in Vietnam.

What was one effect of Tet Offensive?

Quite apart from throwing suspicion upon the competence of U.S. and South Vietnamese leaders to assess North Vietnamese war-making capacity, the Tet Offensive in the Vietnam War had this significant effect: it convinced numerous leaders and observers in the West that the Vietnam War was far from over. With war protests already growing in the United States yet now increasing, the effect of the Tet Offensive, despite that it was a military defeat, amounted to a diplomatic-political "win" for North Vietnam.
