Some effects of Vietnam on the US are the military draft, protests, injuries to and even the death of some protesters, 58,000 dead US servicemen, and 300,000 wounded US servicemen.

There is also the stigma associated with what some perceive as the "waste" of all these lives and all this effort in a conflict that was not winnable by the US, at least in the manner in which it was fought. Much bitterness remained (and, for some, remains) for some servicemen regarding the conflict, and many members of the American public looked down on and even reviled servicemen for their efforts in Southeast Asia. Ask a veteran of this era and poll citizens who did not serve but were alive and young adults when this part of history was unfolding. Be prepared for anything from stony silence to an earful.

The United States began to withdraw troops gradually in 1970, following President Nixon's plan for "Peace with Honor" through the "Vietnamization" of the war. that meant turning U.S. military equipment and positions over to the South Vietnamese military to continue to defend the south on their own. The final U.S. combat troops left Vietnam in April, 1973.

the South Vietnam government fell to the North Vietnamese military in April, 1975, two years after the U.S. departure.

As America lost, this was humiliating, one of the greatest superpowers in the world, holding advanced nuclear weopans were defeated by a half of a tiny country in south East Asia with spears and weak guns on horse back. The US only got involved for a fear of loss of trade, and their fear of communist spreading, seeing it as a virus. One country falls; the rest will follow. Which was Eisenhowers theory. They fought and fought until defeat as America hold their head high and have to win every time, so when they lost it he whole world changed their view of Americas power , which they have never managed to regain. It also allowed the communist Soviet Union (Russia) and China to see how the US reacted to communism.

For Vietnam it was split. Rural people were attracted to the idea of communism, where as urban people were up for capitalist.
