Officially the end of WWII was marked by the reunification of Germany on the 3rd of October 1990.
Before this time there was not a single Germany but 2 separate nations namely the GDR (German Democratic Republic or East Germany) and the FRG (Federal Republic of Germany or West Germany). Even though the German Military represented by Generaloberst Alfred Jobi on behalf of the then leader of Germany Admiral Carl Donitz, in Reimes on May, 7th 1945. Victory in Europe day (VE Day) was May 8th, 1945.
However, it is generally recognised that the War ended on September 2nd, 1945 when Japanese officials signed the Japanese Instrument of surrender aboard USS Missouri. It could be argued that the surrender occurred on August 15th with the Japanese Emperor Hirohito's radio announcement to the nation declaring to them Japanese surrender. Victory over Japan day (VJ Day) was August 15th (14th in the USA), 1945.
An interesting sub note the last surrender of Japanese military personel was Capt. Fumio Nakahira in April 1980.
The event that marks the end of the military phase of the war is called a cease-fire followed by a truce. After that an agreement is drawn up for the sides to sign. This is called a peace agreement or treaty.
