Moscow. The city was largely deserted. A major fire left it uninhabitable and the French decided to go home ! Too late, too late, the Russian winter was upon them and the Cossack raiders harried them all the way back to Poland: Many, many perished through attrition, starvation & the predation of the pursuing Russian forces. Marshal Ney was heroic. Napoleon left the Armee to return to France, ostensibly to raise new troops. After a brief rally they were cornered and heavily defeated at the Battle of the Nations, a massive 3 day conflict in September 1813.

Napoleon's Army reached Moscow on September 14, 1812. This was a disappointing feat for Napoleon because the city had been all but abandoned and destroyed from within.
