The first successful English colony was Jamestown (1607). The first attempts at colonisation were during the period 1584-1587. Three separate groups were sent. All were unsuccessful. The third group, "the Lost Colony"which was comprised of men, women and boys (no girls) disappeared some time after 1587.
The first English colony in what became the United States was that group of people (men, women and children) who have become known as the 'lost colony'. They arrived on Roanoke Island (in what is now North Carolina) in 1587. The colony ultimately failed in their attempt, but that they attempted to settle here is undeniable. There had been two earlier expeditions to Roanoke Island, but only men were involved in those expeditions and were of a more military nature, rather than an attempt to settle families.
