There were competing military and civilian space efforts that preceded the establishment of NASA in 1958. These included the firing of captured German V-2 rockets with scientific instruments and some animals.
The first version of a civilian space program was the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) established in 1946. It included rocket planes such as the Bell X-1 that first broke the sound barrier in level flight.
