The Illuminati is a fictional group based on the "Bavarian Illuminati," an Enlightenment-era secret society founded on May 1, 1776, which disbanded in 1785. The term continues to be used in popular fictional references, and in conspiracy theories. The actual modern existence of any such group is unproven.

The term "Illuminati" is the Latin form of "enlightened".

The movement was founded in May 1, 1776 by Johann Adam Weishaupt, of Ingolstadt, Bavaria. Alternative names for the Illuminati are known as Perfectibilists, The Order of the Illuminati, or Illuminatus. The movement is commonly referred to an offshoot of the Enlightenment-era and is said to be modeled from the Freemasons. They were allowed to operate freely only until 1785, when a keen proponent of "Enlightened Absolutism", the Duke of Bavaria, Charles Theodore, banned all secret societies from operating. The order itself was said to have had over 2000 members in ten years, many of them prominent politicians and leaders, and its influence extended into several European countries.

The Illuminati are often associated with Freemasonry. While there are some similarities there is one striking difference between them. The Illuminati were not a democratic, egalitarian movement. The Freemasons were a proto-democratic, egalitarian movement and have not changed much today. Both groups excluded woman from joining, but today there are female chapters of the Freemasons. Both groups had non-dogmatic belief systems, both favor Deism, and neither is associated with Satanic or Anti-christian beliefs as is commonly argued. George Washington himself was said to have been a Freemason.

The Illuminati are commonly associated with Conspiracy Theories by those who support and disapprove of such organizations. Those who are in favor of the Illuminati say that they are a group of free thinkers who want the best interest of the people they secretly hide from. They want to bridge the differences that come from politics, religion, and social order. Those who are not in favor suggest that they are the group behind the "New World Order," the movement that will cause corruption and ultimately the fall of governments. Their apparent goal is said to be a "Utopian" society where all of the world's countries are unified under one government.

This would require, however, that a modern Illuminatiactually exist, and there has never been any indisputable evidence to that effect.

To put it simply: there is no evidence whatsoever of this group existing past the 1700's. No living person has ever been proven Illuminati in a court of law. It is ludicrous to assume that such an organization could function for well over 200 years without a single exposure.

In present day life, no one. They broke up around 1785. The modern, imaginary Illuminati are no more real than unicorns.

Of course, you have as much right to declare yourself an Illuminatus as anyone else. You can be one if you want. But it is very wrong to call someone else one just because you envy them, the way people do these days. That's accusing them of conspiracy-- not something you want to try unless have an unlimited legal budget.

But in real-life terms, all the actual Illuminati died centuries ago. No living person has ever been proven to be an Illuminati in a court of law.

Historically the Illuminati was a group of individuals who made up an Enlightenment era secret society which began in 1776 and lasted for about ten years, at the most. Nowadays, the Illuminati is considered to be a group of individuals (unknown and unproven) who supposedly are a part of the New World Order, purportedly attempting to control world politics and economics.

For some reason they just won't go away! It's hard to move around when you don't exist!

The Order of Illuminati was a secret society founded by Professor Adam Wesihaupt in his home town of Ingolstadt, Bavaria on 1 May 1776. Nine years later on 1 March 1785, the Duke of Bavaria, Karl Theodore, ordered the organization disbanded and hunted down the members. Weishaupt fled and died in exile in Northern Germany in 1830.

Fiction writers such as Dan Brown, have taken the name and twisted it into some super-secret cabal of ultra powerful who pull the strings behind government, industry, resources, and entertainment for the purposes of turning the world into their own Utopia (noting of course that it would only be a perfect place for those at the top).

The hyperparanoid have taken these fictional stories and run with them. The Illuminati in their minds are out to destroy everything, are worshipers of Satan, are lead directly by the Devil, shoot lightning out their fingertips and thunderbolts from their rectums, and eat small children, along with a number of other nasty behaviors.

There is however, absolutely no evidence to support the existence of any such organization, and a great deal of evidence to support the destruction of the Illuminati, such as they were, in the 18th century.
The Illuminati is a secret society that is made up of elite individuals.

The original Order of Illuminati was organized in 1776 in Bavaria to bring together a group of enlightened thinkers. In 1785, Duke Charles Theodore, ruler of Bavaria, outlawed secret organizations, which disbanded the Illuminati.

Any group claiming that name or anyone claiming to 'know' about a group or its members today is either gullible or selling magazines, books, or movies (or 'hits' on their website to show numbers to advertisers).

Today, Illuminati people are fictional characters.

"Illuminati" is the Latin plural noun for a person who is enlightened.

The Illuminati was an organization (1776-1785) of enlightened intellectuals whose goal was the overthrow of an oppressive monarchy and the control of civil authorities by the Roman Catholic Church. They were very unsuccessful in their endeavor because that monarch successfully destroyed the organization and imprisoned their leadership.
