The Russian empress Catherine II (1729-1796), known as Catherine the Great, reigned from 1762 to 1796. She expanded the Russian Empire, improved administration, and vigorously pursued the policy of Westernization. Her reputation as an "enlightened despot," however, is not wholly supported by her deeds.

Catherine was born Sophia Augusta Frederika of Anhalt-Zerbst on April 21, 1729 in Stettin, then Germany, now Poland.

Was a Queen.

There were two Catherines, or to be more exact, Ekaterinas that have ruled Russia, and Catherine the Great was the second.

Catherine the Great was very open to the ideas of Enlightenment thinkers. People like Voltaire helped her form how she ruled her kingdom. She wanted to allow everyone a chance. Sadly, she is most remembered for expanding Russia's territory.

Catherine II, also known as Catherine the Great was Empress of Russia from 1762 to 1796. She was the first Russian ruler of any competence since the death of Peter the Great in 1725. She was called "the Great" because of the vast amount of land that she acquired for her country. Roughly two-thirds of Poland were annexed to the Russian border in pieces in 1772, 1793 and 1795. In addition, she acquired the Crimea and lands along the Black Sea through wars with the Ottoman Empire. Catherine's right to the throne was subject to some doubt, because she a German princess and obtained it upon the assassination of her husband, Tsar Peter III in 1762, which was, it was suspected, arranged through a conspiracy among several of Catherine's friends.
