They coordinated activities among the American colonies in response to the increasingly authoritarian British rule. This fostered a unity of purpose among the several colonies, which had been deprived of much of their autonomy in the early 1770's.

This ultimately resulted in the First Continental Congress. When war finally erupted in 1775, the committee members were among those who formed the new independent governments in the States.
