What was the incident at Kent State University?

Students had been throwing rocks at the soldiers, who felt that they had to defend themselves. In retrospect, it appeared to have been an error for the governor to have called out the guard in the first place. It remains one of the most tragic events of that period.

It ended in the shooting of four students by Guardsmen, who have been assigned the brunt of blame for the tragedy while the rioters have rarely been held accountable for any of the violence involved.
