The two battles that constituted the Battle of Palmito Ranch (east of Brownsville, Texas) took place on May 12 and 13, 1865, about a month after the surrender of Robert E. Lee's troops at Appomattox, Virginia on April 9.

Confederate troops repulsed a Union attack and captured about 100 soldiers. Southern forces in Texas surrendered on May 26, 1865.

The last battle in the east was the Battle of Columbus(Georgia) on April 16. The battle in Texas occurred after the surrender of Confederate general Johnston to Union general Sherman on April 26. So the Texas battle may be considered to have happened after the "official" end of the war.

Also called the Battle of Girard because

much of it was fought in the town of Girard

(now Phenix City, across the Chattahoochee

River in Alabama), the Battle of Columbus

was the last major battle of the Civil War.

Although there was an encounter later at

Palmitto Ranch, Texas, and fighting even

later in Alabama, the attack on Columbus,

Georgia, was the last large-scale battle of the

war. It is studied by military officers to this day

as a classic example of the confusion

caused by night-time fighting.

By April of 1865, Columbus was the last

surviving industrial city in the South. A major

center for military manufacturing, it was also

the home of significant naval construction

facilities where the new ironclad C.S.S.

Jackson was nearing completion.

The Battle of Palmito Ranch in Texas, May 12-13, 1865. It was a Confederate victory. This was more than a month after Lee surrendered his Army, more than two weeks after Johnston surrendered his Army, and more than week after Taylor surrendered the last organized Confederates east of the Mississippi.

A Confederate ship, the CSS Shenandoah, was still taking Yankee whaling ships in the north Pacific in late June 1865. On June 27 they learned from a newspaper aboard a prize of Lee's surrender, but took seven more ships, until on August 2 they learned of the final Confederate collapse from a British warship. The Shenandoah then sailed to Liverpool, England, arriving November 5, the last Confederates to haul down the flag.
