Point du Hoc was a prominent point on the coast that sat between the American beaches (Utah & OMAHA) and the British & Canadian beaches. This point had a vertical cliff and dropped down to a small beach. The Germans had constructed a large bunker that housed(or was intended to house) a pair of large coastal defense guns that would be capable of firing on any naval vessel that supported the Allied landings on either of the 5 beaches. So it had to be destryoed. In front of this large battery were other batteries and underground bunkers. These were typical beach defenses that had underground bunkers that could protect the Germans and also housed the ammo. The artillery pieces were mounted on semi-circular artillery stand. But these exposed guns may have been destroyed by air and naval barrages. The battleship USS Texas shelled Point du Hoc prior to the Ranger Battalion amphibious assault on the German defenses.

there were five beaches: utah, omaha, juno, gold and sword. All located at Normandy,France, from Ouistreham in the east to just east of Pointe du Hoc in the west. Utah and Omaha beaches were assaulted by US Forces. Juno, Gold and Sword beaches were assulted by the British and Canadians Pointe Du Hoc is also included. True, but Pointe Du Hoc was not classified as a landing beach. Pointe Du Hoc was a 100 foot cliff off the Omaha beach on which there was a German battery of 6 155mm howtizers. To attack the howtizers US rangers had to climb the 100 foot cliff. However, upon reaching the cliff summit it was found that the 6 howtizers had been moved to the rear. The rangers tracked the howtizers and destroyed them but the rangers suffered a high percentage of casualties. The rangers did not assault a beach at Pointe Du Hoc, they climb a cliff................................

Why was point du Hoc so important to D Day?

The Germans had built a concrete bunker to house a large coastal gun. This point of land protruded out into the water such that this gun could see and fire on any ships all along the coast. It was a threat to several of the Allied landing sites. As it turned out, the guns had not been installed or had been removed so this was not a big a threat as they thought.
