June of 1984 ?

Although the People of the State of Ohio had previously voted down a change in the drinking age it was changed despite their vote. The reason was simple Federal Blackmail! The Federal Government threatened to cut off Federal Highway Safety Funding to the State of Ohio if it did not change it's drinking age to 21. So the Ohio Legislature said to hell with the vote of the People of the state and changed it to 21.

Now we hear that this stupid smoking ban in Ohio can not be changed by legislation by the politicians because the people have spoken! Oh yea right! That excuse is a cover up for politicians that have no moral fortitude to make public disclosure about why they chose to take the rights of small business owners! GUTLESS WONDERS THEY ARE!

Even now the State of Ohio is sucking up to the FEDs for more Highway Funding by making non seatbelt use a stopable ticketed offense by police!

I lived in Ohio until I turned 25 in 1985. I find this totally inaccurate as I turned 18 in 1977 and could purchase alcohol legally across the river in West Virginia but, not in Ohio because you had to be 21 in the State of Ohio!

Both above answers are wrong. 11:59PM August 18th 1982 changed from 18 to 19 and then 11:59PM august 18th 1983 changed from 19 to 21. I was born August 19 1964 so could not buy beer in Ohio at 18. My best friend who was born August 18th 1964 could buy beer at 18. Stupid. Ohio voters had turned this down but federally forced to (read this as extortion/blackmail) or lose our highway money.

In 1979, the drinking age in Ohio was 18 which allowed purchase of 3.2% beer only. In 1982 the age was raised to 19. In 1987 it was raised to 21.
