The goddess Aphrodite was very important to the Greeks (and to the Romans as Venus). She was the goddess of love in all of its incarnations from the love of a parent or a sibling to the love a friend to the love of a spouse. While these are all very different kindsof love, she is the patron goddess of each and all.

She is also the goddess of the realm of the adult in contrast to Artemis as the goddess of the realm of the child and the transition in between. Euripides' play Hippolytus is the best example of this difference. This play also comments on the importance of growing up and accepting the responsibility of an adult. In the play, because Hippolytus refuses to worship Aphrodite and wishes to remain with the goddess Artemis for the rest of his life, Aphrodite has him killed for not worshiping her and becoming an adult.

Aphrodite is also important as the goddess of beauty, mainly because of how she obtained that title. It was Aphrodite who started the Trojan War, albeit indirectly. The goddess of discord was very unhappy she was not invited to a party among the gods and goddess of ancient Greece, and so, she arrived uninvited with a beauitful golden apple to give to the most beautiful goddess -- the goddess of beauty. However, at that point, no goddess of beauty had been designated and three goddess stepped forth to claim it: Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite.

The goddess of discord said that there should be a contest and she would pick the judge. She chose Paris, a young Trojan prince, who was out tending sheep to choose which goddess should get the apple, thus choosing the goddess of beauty. Hera offered him an empire if he chose her. Athena offered Paris to become an invicible and strategic warrior if he chose her. Finally, Aphrodite offered Paris the love of the most beautiful woman in the world if he chose her.

Paris awarded the apple to Aphrodite, making her the goddess of beauty. Aphrodite, in return, gave Paris the love of Helen, wife of Menalos (brother of Agamemnon and a powerful Greek king) and daughter of Zeus (in swan form) by Leta. Thus, the Greeks fought for Menalos to get his wife back, and the Trojan War began.

Aphrodite is also the wife of Hephastus and the only goddess who is recorded as being unfaithful -- ususally with Ares, God of War.
