Because every time Britain was conquered, and every time Britain conquered, the British acquired thousands of new words. Which we cheerfully incorporated into our language, with no thought of logic or consistency. The silliness that this has prompted is legendary. We - with a straight face - speak of a "Phonetic Alphabet". While English is the main international language for trade and exchange, we call such a languauge a "lingua franca"! (And yes, we literally say, "English is the lingua franca of the world.", and mean nothing funny by that.) The English - and by the extension the British, and the whole English speaking world - revel in this. We have more words than any other language, and that will always be the case because every time we discover a word in another language that we don't have an equivalent of - we take it and put it in our own English dictionaries! (Example: schadenfreude or papoose) The spelling on these words may be the original spelling from another language - bouquet - or may be our own unique interpretation - debt. But there is no rhyme or reason. Don't bother looking for one.
