The most famous Union column assault of the US Civil War was led by Colonel Emory Upton on May 10, 1864. Upton was a young commander, having graduated from the USMA at West Point in 1861.He had become dismayed with the conduct of the war as he believed was the case by his experience with senior officers. It was Upton that led the most famous column assault of the war at the Spotsylvania Court House. At that juncture of the war he was given command of 12 regiments which he formed into a column, with a three regiment front. His forces charged Rebel fortifications with fixed bayonets. Fierce hand to hand combat was the result and Upton's men broke through the Reels' first line of defense. He assaulted the second line of defense, destroyed an artillery battery and captured 1,000 Confederates.

Upton had no reinforcements and was soon forced to retreat. His column assault, however, is what war historians claim was the most famous one of the war.

What is regarded as the most famous Union column assault in the US Civil War?

In terms of military tactics in the US Civil War, military historians cite the column assault led by Union Colonel Emory Upton. The site was the Spotsylvania Courthouse in May of 1864. This was part of General Grant's Overland campaign. Upton had his columns make a rapid charge against Confederate entrenchments. His forces were able to break through the Rebel lines using storm tactics and to that point in the battle, Upton was successful. Although he was soon forced to retreat because of the failure of reinforcements that he expected to receive from General Mott, Colonel Upton had demonstrated his leadership and the power of column assaults on very good Southern fortifications.
