The record for service members killed in a single conflict, and actually on a single ship, was the case of the 5 Sullivan brothers, who were all serving on the cruiser USS Juneau (CV-52) when it was sunk on November 13, 1942. Their deaths prompted a change in policy, and to existing regulations in 1948 (DD directive 1313.15) to ensure that sole surviving siblings be given the opportunity to be removed from combat duty.

Iwo Jima was by far the costliest single campaign for the US, but the slaughter pales when compared to the battle of the Somme in 1915 when close to 600,000 soldiers were killed in four days.
