Germany was not the main enemy in World War 1, although they are often made out to be. The actual enemy was mainly Austria, but, since it fell early, Germany was made to take most the blame, even though it was just brought in by alliance systems. Note that Italy was an allied nation in WWI, but an axis nation in WWII. The alliances were the Triple Alliance, which was the one Germany was in (later called the Central powers), whose major players were Germany, the Austrian Empire, and Turkey, and the Triple Entente (later called the Allied powers), whose members were those listed above.
