The colosseum was actually more like a round theater with places for people to sit made out of wood becoming higher towards the "high wall" like in a cinema to achieve better view. The wood did no survive the ages, but the stone did and now everything looks as if it was surrounded by a huge circular wall.

Also, sound is kept better in a circular shape, like the human ear as well, so it was possible to communicate with the audience.
