Mounds were build as a part of spiritual ritual. Today many would consider the mounds, one example being the Serpent mound located in Ohio as art. But, art during the time that most of these mounds were formed was not made for art sake it was used for spiritual means ans solstice worship. Another example of a mound is in Louisiana (named Poverty Point).
