World War II, 1939-1945, resulted in an unprecedented scale of destruction of lives (over 60 million dead, most of them civilians), and the use of Weapons of Mass Destruction. Some of the acts committed against civilians during the war were on such a massive scale of savagery, they came to be widely considered as crimes against humanity itself. As the war's conclusion drew near, many shocked voices called for the establishment of institutions able to permanently prevent deadly international conflicts. This led to the founding of the United Nations in 1945,

The UN was established in 1945 to promote world peace and cooperation. It was intended to maintain peace, security, and respect for human rights.

The Preamble of the UN Charter reads:

WE THE PEOPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS DETERMINED

- to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and

- to regain faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and

- to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and

- to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,

AND FOR THESE ENDS

- to practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours, and

- to unite our strength to maintain international peace and security, and

- to ensure, by the acceptance of principles and the institution of methods, that armed force shall not be used, save in the common interest, and

- to employ international machinery for the promotion of the economic and social advancement of all peoples,

HAVE RESOLVED TO COMBINE OUR EFFORTS TO ACCOMPLISH THESE AIMS.

Accordingly, our respective Governments, through representatives assembled in the city of San Francisco, who have exhibited their full powers found to be in good and due form, have agreed to the present Charter of the United Nations and do hereby establish an international organization to be known as the United Nations.

The United Nations, or more popularly known as the Allied Powers of the Second World War was the alliance of nations at war with the Pact of Steel Alliance of Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. The victorious core superpowers (British Empire, Unites States, Republic of China (seat inherited by Peoples Republic), French Empire and USSR (seat inherited by the Russian Federation) form the UN Security council. This alliance wascapitalizedupon after the war to dismantle the Empires and overseedecolonizationto safeguard all parties from retribution and to mediate and preempt Word War 3.

The existence of the Cold War and lack of WW3 lend credence to the success of the UN in its primary role after victory in the European and Pacific theaters of the Second World War.

The UN was brought about, to replace the League of Nations, after WWII in 1945, to act as an impartial peacekeeper by allowing representatives of different countries to discuss any issues that might arise about economics, human rights, conflict etc. The UN's intention is to bring the global community together to solve international issues diplomatically and democratically.

The UN was established in 1946 in order to provide a mechanism that promoted world peace and cooperation. This was in contrast to the previous League of Nations which was ineffective at maintaining those ends. In its early years, it made numerous overtures to promote peace, security, and respect for human rights.
