They first tried moving to Amsterdam but were not happy so they returned to Enland. In 1620 they decided to go to VA and settle a few miles from Jamestown, but a storm blew them off course and they landed in Massachusetts. They came to the new world with the full intention of staying and living according to their beliefs.
There wasn't really a reason as to why it was founded. It was actually a mistake on the Mayflowers fault. It was taken off-course and landed there where they set up Plymouth.
