One immediate result of the Homestead Act of 1862 was that it gave the slaves who were freed by the Emancipation Proclamation a place to go, a place where they would be welcome, not persecuted. It also created opportunities for landless US citizens and hundreds of thousands of European immigrants.
The Homestead Act, officially opened on January 1, 1863, also created a method of westward expansion that would last for 123 years, until it was repealed in 1986.
