The Japanese believed that the citizens of the United States were too racially impure to be able to endure such an attack, especially while involved in a war in Europe. They wanted to control the Pacific and believed that they could force the U.S. out of Hawaii by bombing our interests. Instead, the bombing of Hawaii only caused the U.S. to declare war on Japan and eventually resulted in the death of so many innocent people.

Besides prompting the US to enter World War II by declaring war on Japan, it signaled the future of most combat between naval fleets: the aircraft carrier became dominant. The US had only two combat carriers in 1941, but by the end of the war it had dozens of carriers with various sizes and functions.
