The smallest sauropod is thought to be Anchisaurus. This primitive sauropod dinosaur was only just classified as a sauropod. It was previously thought to be from the even more primitive prosauropod family. It is estimated to be only 2.4 meters in length. It lived in the early Jurassic Period about 199 million years ago until 188 million years ago although later species would be slightly larger at about 4 meters. This was one of the first dinosaurs discovered in North America.

Another slightly more evolved sauropod was Ohmenosaurus. This 4 meter sauropod is only known from a few scattered leg bone fossils from Germany but is generally considered to look more like the classic sauropod than the Anchisarus. Again it comes from the early Jurassic and is considered a primitive sauropod.

The Magyarosaurus was a 6 meter Titanosaur Sauropod. The Titanosaurs is the same group of sauropods as the heaviest known dinosaur Argentinasaurus. It lived at the end of the time of dinosaurs in the late Cretaceous Period 70 - 65.5 million years ago.
