He served five terms as president of Mexico: 1858-1861 as interim, 1861-1865, 1865-1867, 1867-1871 and 1871-1872.

The first time happened after the Conservatives rose up in arms against the Mexican president, Ignacio Comonfort. Comonfort resigned, and according to the Mexican Constitution, Juarez would be interim President of Mexico until a new election could be held.

Successive terms came to be after elections were made.
