- political systems: the East was a one-party police state under the SED, or the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, the West was a multi-party democratic state mainly governed for the first 20 years by the CDU/CSU and then by various coalition governments.
- WG inhereited a large industrial capacity, EG a large agriarian economy.
- WG became a Nato member, E G a Warsaw pact member
- EG had a large emmigration problem, WG a large Immigration problem
Similarities include:
- founded in the same year, 1949
- both suffered terrorism of some kind:
- WG through groups like the Baader-Mienhof Gang
- EG through the operation of the State Security Services, the Stasi.
- common language, common currency (except East DMs not tender in West)
