AnswerActually, the fact that slaves were freed due to the ratification of the 13 Amendment, caused many southern whites to discourage the reconstruction that the North had planned. Some of these problems included land distribution, military location in the south, and the prevention of black intimidation

Well as you can imagine it was hard for the South to talk to the North after the war. After all, after you fight with someone and think you going to win or say your going to win to the opposing person/team -- there is going to be a pride problem. How are you going to be able to talk to that person? That alone would be a social problem. Then you have your own slaves that just got freed, how are you going to talk to them? Other problems they had included; land distribution, military location (for the south), and the preventation of black intimidation.

The South suffered a great deal of physical destruction as well as destruction to the economy. Money was scarce and times were hard for all even without the Yankee invaders. The South lost the war and was under martial law. The whites were treated like a defeated enemy by the occupying army. The blacks were free but had no jobs, no homes, no health care, no transportation, no money and and no education.
