Depends at what time.

At the start of the Gallipoli Campaign they were naive with grandiose ideas of the glory of war.

They quickly learned otherwise and became bitter after losing so many friends. But despite this bitterness, there was always humour. They would joke with one another and enjoy the time they had left. Despite all the death going on, they adopted the common "if there's one with my name on it" idea. They were resigned to death, but not unhappy about it.

It's hard to explain.
