One of the problems facing the US was the question of what to do with the leaders of the Confederacy. Another issue was that of protecting black voting/citizen rights. After the war there was still many prejudices. The black citizens were free, but they did not gain freedom. Finally, another problem was deciding where to go next. The country was united after the war, but the question that remained was what is the next step to achieve a common bond, and remain in unity.
Immediately following the US Civil War, the South had a devastated economy. Farms and plantations had been destroyed, mules and horses taken away, and the farm economy was in ruins.
A huge number of bridges and hundreds of miles of railroad track had been destroyed.
Many of the city centers had been devastated. Factories and mills and ports were not operational. Critical workers and managers had been killed in the war.
Racism and bigotry against freed slaves was tremendous and many had no place to call home. Lynchings and abuse were commonplace in many areas, and jobs were not available to blacks.
The economic wealth of the South in 1860, reached only to 75% of that figure in 1900. The Southern economy took a century to recover.
In speaking about the US Civil War, the US had the difficult problem of reuniting the former Confederate states into the US. This was a severe challenge as the Southerners had strong hatred for the Republican administration and believed that former slaves were not equal to whites.
